This is a map of Guangdong Province. Lianjiang is in the very bottom tip. We will spend the adoption portion of our trip in Guangzhou, which is the capital of Guangdong Province. (mid-way in the map) Amelia will be brought to us on a bus---a 5 to 6 hour trip. Thats alot for a little one isnt it? traveling 5 to 6 hours on a bus to be handed off to strangers. She'll be scared at first, but soon she'll realize that we are going to take good care of her. Boy, are we EVER going to take good care of her. We cant wait to meet her, but we understand that while we have had years to prepare for meeting her, she hasnt had the opportunity to prepare for us at all. We pray for an easy adjustment for her.
Back to the topic at hand: Guangdong Province.................
Guangdong is bordered by the South China Sea and has over 1300 miles of coastline. The capital of the province, Guangzhou, sits at the head of the Pearl River Delta which empties into the sea. Guangdong is one of China's most densely cultivated and populated areas, with a huge influx of workers migrating there to seek employment.
Guangzhou is an ancient city with 2800 years worth of history. By 1514, the city was already an international port. That makes you realize how young our nation really is, doesnt it? Guangzhou is the site where the opium wars began, and where the founder of the Chinese Republic, Sun Yatsen started the movement to unify China.
Guangdong Province has a sub-tropical climate. The Tropic of Cancer runs a few kilometers north of Guangzhou. It is often called the "spring city" because the long summers keep things green and blooming for much of the year. Summers are very hot, and are slap in the middle of typhoon season.
This province is famous for its Cantonese cuisine. This is the type Chinese food with which most of us are familiar. The reason is that most overseas Chinese people are from Guangdong province, and they have brought their culinary traditions with them.
Famous saying: In Beijing one talks, In Shanghai on shops, and in Guangzhou one eats! Guangzhou is famous for dim sum, and an eclectic menu that contains all kinds of fresh meats, vegetables and seafood...........and a nice variety of.........insects! I'm feeling adventurous, how bout you?
